November sees the opening of the Little Embassy School in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City – an infant-toddler centre and preschool for children aged 2-6 years. Reggio Children curated consulting for design of the school spaces and for staff professional development, with professional growth workshops in Reggio Emilia and Vietnam, and video-conferencing for distance communication.
Reggio Children will be continuing with constant pedagogical and organisational consulting on this project
Claudia Giudici, President of Reggio Children and Paola Ricò, Responsible for Reggio Children professional development, are currently in Vietnam participating in the first public conference on “The Reggio Emilia Approach in the Vietnamese Context”.
Reggio Children’s history with Vietnam goes back a long way, but has become increasingly intense over the last year with “Mosaic of graphics, marks and materials”, an exhibition by Reggio Children and the Istituzione of Preschools and Infant-toddler centres, showing in Ho Chi Minh City for two years together with a connected Atelier; and an international conference, “Seed and Sparks”, again in Ho Chi Minh City with the participation of speakers from different parts of the world.
Agreements for the new school were made with the Embassy Education Group in Ho Chi Minh City, a project conceived by the Soul Music and Performing Arts Academy founded by Vietnamese-Australian Thanh Bui, who would like to see the paradigms of Vietnamese education change, encouraging greater creativity, critical thinking and inter-disciplinary learning in young students. He would also like to create quality education for all of Vietnam’s children, which is the reason why he explored the world looking for the most interesting educational approaches - and so encountered Reggio Emilia, and the Reggio Emilia Approach.
A collaboration that will lead, in the future, to the development of other projects.
The Reggio Emilia Approach® is an educational philosophy based on the image of a child with strong potentialities for development and a subject with rights, who learns through the hundred languages belonging to all human beings, and grows in relations with others.
